Postdoctoral Position in
Rhamnogalacturonan-II Structure and Function

Research Description

The University of Georgia's Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (www.ccrc.uga.edu) has an opening for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with experience in complex carbohydrate analysis starting on or after Janurary 1, 2022. The successful applicant will contribute to a US Department of Energy-funded project using experimental and computational approaches to elucidate the molecular features of pectic polysaccharides in the plant cell wall. The goal of this research program is to identify structural features of rhamnogalacturonan-II (RG-II) that control dimer self-assembly. The research will involve 1- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analyses using MALDI-MS/MS and/or LC-MS/MS. The qualified applicant would join a multi-disciplinary team comprised of researchers from the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center in Athens, GA and the National Renewable Energy laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics or a related discipline. A background in biomolecular NMR is preferred but not required. Strong communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English are essential as is the ability to work in a collaborative scientific environment. The position is for a period of 1 year with the option for extension.

The Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (www.ccrc.uga.edu) located in Athens, GA has outstanding resources for high-field NMR spectroscopy, including 900 MHz, 800 MHz, three 600 MHz and a 500 MHz spectrometers. The center is also equipped with state-of-the-art ESI and MALDI mass spectrometers, HPLC and GC-MS instruments.

Candidates should submit their applications as a single PDF document by email to Malcolm O’Neill ([email protected]). The document must contain: (i) a cover letter describing their research interests, career goals and motivation for the position, (ii) a current CV, and (iii) the names and contact information for three individuals willing to provide professional letters of support. Applications must also be submitted to The Univeristy of Gerogia Employment Services: https://www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/226219

The University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation or protected veteran status.
